It’s the first step towards homelessness! In the first six months of last year alone, 1,119 eviction notices were sent to tenants with payment difficulties.
Most indebted tenants lived in Marzahn-Hellersdorf (228), Spandau (144) and Lichtenberg (143).
In order to prevent bad consequences just in time, the Senate is planning a model project: judicial employees instead of postmen should hand over the complaints directly. Because according to the applicable procedural law, this is the last possible time for the tenants concerned to successfully respond to the lawsuit.
Otherwise there is a risk of a default judgment. At the district court of Pankow alone, there were 95 out of 118 judgments in total last year.
Another advantage: In this way, the social welfare offices could find out about the impending eviction in good time and take over the tenants’ debts, as the justice administration announced in response to a request from left-wing MPs.

In fact, 1,326 evictions were carried out in the previous year – but they were only statistically recorded from the 2nd quarter. Terminations are not only possible because of rent arrears, but also because of personal use, disturbance of the peace in the house, neglect of the apartment and unauthorized subletting.
However, there are also a number of job centers that have taken over rent and energy debts. At least 3737 cases were requested, 1036 of them in Lichtenberg alone, 597 in Treptow-Köpenick and 361 in Spandau.
