The New York Yankees have always seen something special in Spencer Jones; their second-best prospect and one of the top 100 prospects in all of Major League Baseball.
There’s a reason they selected him in the first round of the 2022 MLB Draft, invited him to spring training, and refused to involve him in negotiations that could have resulted in the acquisition of a star.
The New York team’s situation has led to that changing somewhat and there are reports that they offered Jones in discussions before the trade deadline. His offensive problems with Somerset were the impediment to closing a deal.
The left-handed hitting outfielder hasn’t fared as well in the majors in 2024 (.246 average, .748 OPS, 14 homers, 20 doubles and 63 RBIs) and has consistently been behind Jasson Dominguez in the organization’s timing and plans. He hasn’t made his major league debut and there don’t appear to be any immediate plans for him to do so.
In fact, the Dominican is called to be a starter in 2025 and Jones has not been mentioned more than “his time has not yet come”But a series of events could happen that will give you the opportunity to see him on the team.
For him to be a starter, a lot of things may have to happen, and the first of them is that they don’t trade him in the winter. Also, Dominguez getting hurt again, Trent Grisham being released and Alex Verdugo leaving in free agency.
But if the Yankees decide to go by what they saw in spring training rather than this season’s numbers, he may have a chance. In any case, in a hypothetical scenario, Jones could be New York’s new left fielder.
The organization has a lot of faith in the power of their left-handed bat and could have a spot reserved for him in the offensive heart of the lineup, as a backup to slugger Giancarlo Stanton.
