Dark mode of WhatsApp Web and Desktop

The Android app from WhatsApp recently has a dark mode and this feature also comes to WhatsApp Web and Desktop. This shows screenshots that are on WABetaInfo have been published. The website writes that WhatsApp is still working on dark mode and does not state when we can expect the feature exactly.

The screenshots (see above) do give us a taste of what we can expect. When the dark mode is switched on, the chat app has a dark look in the chat and settings screen, for example. We can see that the function is not yet finished by the white background with the emoji.

As with the mobile version, WhatsApp does not get a totally black interface, but the color is more dark gray. Unfortunately we do not know when WhatsApp will roll out this feature for Web and Desktop; the mobile version also took a very long time and is only recently available on Android.

This is how you use the dark mode in the Android app

As mentioned, you can already use the dark mode in the Android version of the chat app. You can activate this by following the steps below. The dark mode is better for your eyes and better for the battery life of your smartphone.

  1. Open WhatsApp on your Android phone and tap the three dots at the top right;
  2. Choose “Settings> Chats> Theme” and select Dark;
  3. The dark mode is now switched on.
