This is what Portal looks like on Nintendo 64

Transforming new games to look like they run on old hardware has become popular lately. Earlier this year, for example, we got Bloodborne as it might have looked on the first PlayStation console.

To save machine power, the game loads only what you can see.

For some, however, it is not enough that it just to be old out. They want the games actually driving on the aging consoles, as with the modder that has created a version of Portal that works on Nintendo 64.

This weekend, James Lambert released a new video from his Portal Demake project. The game is still in the development phase, but as you can see in the video window at the top of the article, there is a lot to feel.

As Lambert says, it was only recently that he made the portal weapon work. Just like in the original game, you can create portals in the east and west, and send both yourself and your beloved Companion Cube through without any problems.

The video also shows how the environment in the game pops in and out depending on what the player is watching. It has been necessary for the 26-year-old machine to cope with everything that goes on, which it does surprisingly well.

Lambert plans to continue working on the project, and promises, among other things, that one will eventually be able to see the game character through the portals – something that is currently not possible. You can follow the progress, and download the game to try for yourself, via Github.
