USA. Rumors are currently doing the rounds about a new trilogy in the successful “Star Wars” franchise. Initial information about the new project is already known.
In December 2019 – almost five years ago – “Star Wars IX: The Rise of Skywalker“, the last film in the world-famous science fiction franchise, was released in cinemas and thus supposedly concluded the plot of the Skywalker saga. However, as has now become known, according to Deadline, a new trilogy is in the works at Lucasfilm, which will include episodes ten to twelve.
This would also mean that in these films the plot of the previous films could continue and old characters could return to the screen. It is not yet clear whether these films will replace the planned film with Daisy Ridley, who played the Jedi fighter Rey in the previous trilogy.
Kinberg responsible for project
There is no information at all about the plot yet. According to insiders, the planned trilogy could also take completely new paths and not continue the existing plot that was actually concluded in Episode IX, but establish a new storyline.
The only thing that is certain so far is that screenwriter Simon Kinberg has been hired for the project. The 51-year-old previously directed the films “X-Men: Dark Phoenix” and “The 355”. As a screenwriter, he worked on “Sherlock Holmes”, “Fantastic Four” and the television series “Star Wars Rebels”, among others. He is no stranger to George Lucas’s universe. As a producer, the American also worked on “Logan – The Wolverine”, “The Martian” and “Deadpool”.
Release date still unknown
It is not yet clear when the first film in the new trilogy will be released in cinemas. Disney and Lucasfilm’s original schedule called for the Rey film to be released in German cinemas on December 17, 2026. However, it is currently not certain whether this date can be kept due to production difficulties.
