It was big news in the United States: President Donald Trump has a real Triller account since Saturday. With the step to the American video app, Trump probably wants to fire a shot in his battle with music app TikTok. But what is this ‘TikTok for adults’ app anyway?
The popular music video app TikTok is in danger of disappearing from the United States within a few months. Trump distrusts the app, whose parent company is from China. Several US companies are currently vying for the chance to take over the Western arm of the app.
But some TikTok rivals have been around for some time in the United States. Music app Triller, which has also been a platform for a Trump account since this weekend, is one of the biggest candidates.
The US app has been around since 2015, two years before TikTok was released in the United States. The app was originally intended for creating playback videos for both normal users and musicians.
Triller works with artificial intelligence
Soon, Triller expanded into a social network, in which users, just like on TikTok, can make all kinds of videos to the music. The videos are each fifteen seconds long.
Music is paramount to Triller – the company makes most of its money from content partnerships and deals with influencers, not ads.
The selling point where the app boasts the most is artificial intelligence. The program contains a special cut-and-paste algorithm that can independently compose a music video from a number of clips.

How does Triller work then?
It’s pretty simple. You start the app and look up a number. There you choose a fragment of 15 seconds. You can use Triller’s music library as well as music on your own phone.
Then you record a video. That can be one, but you can also choose to record multiple clips. The clips are easy to edit with emojis and drawings.
With a click on the ‘Shuffle’ button you turn on the algorithm. He selects the best parts from the various clips, which best fit the beats of the music. Then you can slide a little bit in the end product yourself.
Other users can then comment or copy music from your videos. You can do the same for videos without music. With these ‘social videos’ you can record whatever you want.
Why does Trump choose Triller?
The app does not have very different functions than other apps on the market, such as Byte and Instagram Reels. However, unlike TikTok, it is American-made and currently partly owned by Hollywood producer Ryan Kavanaugh.
Triller wants himself profiling as “TikTok for adults” and says, unlike TikTok, that it aims to target a target group of people in their twenties. The approach seems to be catching on: since the beginning of August, Triller has been the most downloaded free app in the App Store in 85 countries, according to Forbes. TikTok gets stuck at number three.
Several well-known TikTokkers have also started using Triller in recent months. In fact, TikTok star Josh Richards has recently even become a top executive at the company. Musicians like Snoop Dogg, Lil Wayne and Justin Bieber are also present on the platform.
The app has now been downloaded 250 million times – for TikTok that number is 2 billion. 65 million people also actively use the app.
Trump has mainly used the app to lash out at his Democratic rival Joe Biden. He posted three videos last weekend, two of them about Biden.
