This is the world’s most expensive game

This summer reported Gamer.no about a very rare copy of Super Mario Bros. that was auctioned off for over one million kroner, which made it the most expensive game copy ever sold. Now the record has been broken – by the sequel.

The website The Verge reports that a copy of Super Mario Bros. 3 from 1990 was recently sold for the neat sum of 156,000 dollars – about 1.4 million kroner – which is a new world record.

The starting bid was 62,500 dollars, approximately 560,000 kroner, not a modest sum either, but from there the bidding round escalated fairly quickly.

Unique layout

The game was sold via Heritage Auctions. It is naturally an unopened, sealed copy in excellent condition, but there is another reason why this particular cassette stands out.

The special thing about the copy is that the “Bros.” part of the logo is located on the left of the cover, where it partially covers Mario’s white gloves. In regular editions of the game is “Bros.” located in the middle, just above Mario’s hat.

This alone makes the game copy extremely rare, and copies of the game with this layout should have been almost impossible for collectors to track down.

In addition, the game is in very good condition. The website Wata Games, which specializes in assessing game collectibles, gave the game box 9.2 points, which is almost perfect, while the seal held to the grade A +, one notch below the top grade.
