jpnn.com, JAKARTA – Oncologist from Dharmais Cancer Hospital, dr. Walta Gautama said that women who have never been pregnant and breastfed are more susceptible to breast cancer.
The reason is, breasts never rest from hormone estrogen, which increases the risk of breast cancer.
In contrast to pregnant women, the breasts will rest. Because estrogen is used by the uterus to develop or enlarge.
“So, every pregnant and lactating woman turns out to be a break from estrogen in her breasts,” said the head of the central board of the Indonesian Surgeon Oncology Association in a virtual event about breast cancer, Wednesday (6/10).
He also said that during pregnancy the uterus becomes elastic to the size of the fetus and never tears.
Menstruation stops during pregnancy thereby reducing exposure to estrogen and progesterone.
A similar condition occurs when women breastfeed.
Findings from the American Institute for Cancer Research (AICR) and the World Cancer Research Fund (WCFR) in 2017 showed lactation reduces lifetime exposure to hormones such as estrogen, which is linked to an increased risk of breast cancer.
