VIVA – According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the characteristics of the new variant of COVID-19, Omicron that is rapidly contagious, is the ability of the virus itself to cause a disease.

Clinical Pathology Specialist from Siloam Hospitals Semarang, dr. Instinct Ng. Sp. PK., explained that the Omicron variant became a VOC (Variant of Concern) because it is highly contagious and there is a possibility of a decrease in the effectiveness of the current diagnostic tools and vaccines.

According to him, this variant spreads quickly and can reinfect survivors or those who have received doses of the vaccine. Although until now, the risk of hospitalization, severe symptoms and even death due to the Omicron variant is still relatively low.

“However, we should remain vigilant because the more people who are affected, the higher the risk of vulnerable groups (elderly, children and comorbid) to be affected, increasing the hospital occupancy rate, the hospital is full. he said during a health talk education entitled “Recognizing Omicron Variants, Prevent Third Wave” on Instagram live channel, Friday 7 January 2022.

PCR Test As Accurate Detection
Since the stipulation of the COVID-19 pandemic status in March 2019, until now the corona virus has mutated into several variants, namely Alpha, Beta, Delta and the latest is the Omicron variant.

The most ideal examination to detect COVID-19 infection to date can be done by using the PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) or Swab PCR test method. The swab test method is used to take samples from the nose and throat.

Meanwhile, the study explains that the Omicron variant is more dominant in the ‘Bronchus’ area unlike the Delta variant which is more dominant in the lung parenchyma.
