Space agencies like NASA have tried to anticipate the threat asteroid towards Earth. But there is one aspect of asteroids that is called the most dangerous. What’s that?
NASA has launched a mission called DART to try to hit the asteroid so that it changes its path away from Earth. But the problem is, humans are still very bad at predicting the threat of asteroids. That is the aspect that is considered dangerous.
“Since 1988, our planet has been hit by more than 1,200 asteroids larger than a meter. Not big enough to damage our planet or annihilate, but enough to cause damage,” wrote Alexander Martin, a science columnist for Sky News. detikINET, Thursday (27/1/2022).
Worse, of the thousands of asteroids that hit Earth, only 5 were detected. The percentage is 0.42%. So no matter how sophisticated the technology to counteract it, it’s useless if the detection system is not qualified.
“Detection system asteroid we never give a warning more than a day before an asteroid is tracked, although scientists hope there will be an increase,” said Alexander.
If the asteroid is detected just moments before it hits Earth, of course the preparations to avoid disaster are lacking. For example, the process of evacuating residents in affected areas can be delayed.
Indeed, asteroid detection technology is still in its early stages. Keeping an eye on the object in the darkness of space depends on the light reflecting off the asteroid onto Earth. If the asteroids were to come from an out-of-sight angle, they would crash undetected and pose a potentially grave danger.
Luckily for now, NASA ensures that in a fairly long time there is no observable asteroid large enough to hit Earth and endanger living things.
“We tracked a lot asteroid, yet at the same time, there is no currently known threat to Earth. No asteroid that we know of presents a significant threat to Earth,” said Kelly Fast of NASA’s Planetary Defense Coordination Office recently.
