Last weekend, when she was on the beach in Raversijde (Ostend), Nathalie Colpaert made a discovery that can be described as amazing. She fell on a Portuguese galley, a “jellyfish” usually found in the warmer seas of the globe.
The Portuguese galleys are not really jellyfish, or even animals. In reality, thousands of marine organisms are supported together by a small “float”. And they are very dangerous. Indeed, if their size on the surface does not exceed a few centimeters, their tentacles can reach the size of 50 meters long. And these tentacles are extremely poisonous.
Last year, several specimens were observed in the region of Mallorca and Ibiza, and Portuguese galleys were also reported along the French and British coasts. According to the Nieuwsblad, which relays the information, it would be the first case in Belgium since … 1912. At the time, a Portuguese galley had been observed in Knokke.
The “animal” has more than likely drifted due to recent storms.
