TRIBUNJOGJA.COM, YOGYA – The symptoms of Covid-19 are increasingly diverse, one of them hearing disorders.
Dr. Anton Sony Wibowo SpTHTKL MSc FICS said that the SARS Cov-2 virus infection was reported to cause hearing disorders in Covid-19 patients.
“The type of disorder that appears is the type of hearing loss due to sensorineural hearing loss. In addition, ringing ears and a lack of hearing ability can occur,” he explained Friday (26/3/2021).

Anton explained that hearing disorders what happens to Covid-19 patients is not a new symptom.
It’s just a symptom that has just been reported in Covid-19 patients.
Anton mentioned from the Koumpa et al 2020 study published in the British Medical Journal (BMJ) that shows this hearing disorders sensorinuiral in Covid-19 patients.
This publication presents the first cases reported in April 2020 in Thailand.
Furthermore, Anton said that until now there was no data regarding the number of confirmed cases reported.
Meanwhile, from several case reports in Iran in 2020, it was mentioned that Covid-19 patients experienced it hearing disorders are in the age range 22-40 years.
Meanwhile, the first case report in the UK occurred in a man aged 45 years.
So how can Covid-19 affect hearing? Anton said the exact mechanism of this is not yet clear.
However, from several case reports, one of which is Uranaka et al in 2020, revealed that there are ACE-2 receptors which are the places where the Covid-19 virus attaches to the middle and inner ear.
This is like a similar mechanism to smell nerve damage, but in this condition it occurs in the auditory nerve and the hearing organs.
“Until now there has been no published data for sure how long it will take hearing disorders in Covid-19 patients. It’s just that in a case report in England, there was an improvement in hearing after giving treatment, but the condition did not return to normal, “he explained.
