The discourse of moving to a federation arose in the aftermath of events in the 2022 AFF U-19 Cup. At that time, the U-19 Indonesian National Team (Timnas) failed to qualify for the semifinals despite never losing and being the most productive.
Garuda Nusantara actually won 11 points in the final standings of Group A, the same as Vietnam U-19 and Thailand U-19. However, the hosts had to be eliminated because they lost head-to-head to the two rivals.
Despite crushing Myanmar U-19 with a score of 5-1 in the closing match of Group A, Indonesia U-19 still ran aground because the Vietnam U-19 vs Thailand U-19 duel ended in a 1-1 draw.
What is in the spotlight is that there is an element of flirting in the Vietnam U-19 vs Thailand U-19 match. Because, when the score was 1-1, they were reluctant to attack each other and the players often pretended to fall to kill time.
This is why fans suggested that Indonesia move to a federation, in this case EAFF. PSSI is also reportedly interested in realizing the proposal. So, what is the difference between EAFF and AFF tournaments?
The AFF consists of 12 countries, namely Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam, Thailand, Singapore, Philippines, Laos, Cambodia, Timor Leste, Brunei Darussalam, Myanmar and Australia.
However, the AFF is not a federation that is shaded by FIFA. Currently there are only six recognized federations namely Europe (UEFA), Latin America (CONMEBOL), North America (CONCACAF), Asia (AFC), Africa (CAF) and Oceania (OFC).
However, AFF has a number of tournaments for senior level and age level, both male and female. This can be used as an opportunity to hone skills.
