This is the cause of a third of deaths on earth related to hot temperatures

Jakarta

Researchers warn of an increase in the number of deaths as global temperatures rise. They say more than a third of heat-related deaths in summer are caused by global warming.

Scientists research how climate change affects human health. They project that most of the risk of heat waves, droughts, wildfires and other extreme events being exacerbated by climate change.

How far this situation can get worse depends on how quickly humans can control carbon emissions. Experts note that carbon emissions on Earth reached a record high in 2019. Carbon emissions had decreased sharply during the COVID-19 pandemic situation.

However, as quoted from AFP, Wednesday (2/6/2021) one of the latest studies conducted by an international research team consisting of 70 experts showed that there are health consequences.

The findings, published in the scientific journal Nature Climate Change, are striking. Data from 732 sites in 43 countries spread across every inhabited continent revealed that on average 37% of all heat-related deaths were directly related to global warming.

“Climate change is not something that is still far ahead. We can already see and measure its negative impact on health, and the impact on the environment and ecology is already known,” said one of the researchers Antonio Gasparrini, professor of biostatistics and epidemiology at the London School of Hygiene. and Tropical Medicine.

The authors say, if extended worldwide, their method would add up to more than 100,000 heat-related deaths per year. That figure could be an underestimation as the two regions where data is mostly missing – South Asia and central Africa – are known to be particularly vulnerable to deaths from extreme heat.

But at least, the 100,000 figure is consistent with a recent analysis from the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluations (IHME). They counted more than 300,000 heat-related deaths worldwide from all causes in 2019.

If more than a third of those deaths were due to climate change, as Gasparrini’s team reports, the global total deaths would indeed be more than 100,000 cases.

India accounts for more than a third of the total IHME tally, and four of the five worst-affected countries are in South Asia and Central Africa.

Data on heat-related deaths caused by global warming in the new study varied widely from country to country.

In the United States, Australia, France, the United Kingdom and Spain for example, the percentage of heat-related deaths is roughly in line with the national average of 35%-39%. For Mexico, South Africa, Thailand, Vietnam and Chile, the figure rose above 40%.

While in six other countries, namely Brazil, Peru, Colombia, the Philippines, Kuwait and Guatemala, the percentage of heat-related deaths caused by climate change was 60% or more.

In this study, the experts used a complex methodology that combined health data and temperature records from 1991 to 2018, coupled with climate modeling.

The methodology allows researchers to compare the actual number of heat-related deaths with how many fewer deaths without warming up man made.
