This is the best-selling sports car in the world for the seventh year in a row | drive

True car enthusiasts know it by now, but for many it still comes as a surprise after seven years: the best-selling sports car in the world is not the Mazda MX-5 or the Porsche 911, but the Ford Mustang.

In Europe, the car is hardly found on the highways and that is not surprising, because the Ford Mustang is usually equipped with a six or eight cylinder engine. The other, pure electric Mustang Mach-E, which is popular here, was not counted. And rightly so, because that is an SUV and not a sports car.

In other continents, on the other hand, the Mustang is doing great, even though a new generation is now being worked on. According to S&P Global Mobility, 69,069 units were sold worldwide last year. Due to global supply problems, this is less than in 2020, when Ford also took first place with 80,577 units, but the figures remain impressive.

More than three quarters of the sales (52,414 copies) remained in the United States, but sales also went well elsewhere. In some markets, the model even experienced a significant revival, such as in New Zealand where sales increased by more than 50 percent. The Mustang was also popular in Brazil (+37.3 percent) and South Korea (+16.6 percent).

According to Ford president Kumar Galhotra, it’s clear why the Mustang finishes first in sales rankings time and again. “When fans around the world get into a Mustang, they unlock a sense of freedom and experience the open road. That feeling, along with its iconic design, great powertrains and a passionate global community, all contribute to Mustang’s leadership position for the seventh year in a row.”
