But the hope of seeing what the Magi have brought in the morning cannot be understood without another fundamental and symbolic detail that characterizes these dates: The roscón.
For this reason, and coinciding with these days in which many parents and relatives are still looking for last-minute gifts or inquiring to find the best dessert, the Organization of Consumers and Users (OCU) has published its usual ranking of the best Resyes roscones you can find in the supermarket.
The best roscón de Reyes for the OCU
For 10 years, as pointed out by the OCU, this Christmas sweet is just as traditional around these dates as the analysis and selection of the best roscones you can buy in the supermarket.
According to a comparative study between nine of these desserts so typical of January 6, the best valued among all of them for 2023 has been, once again, the one from El Corte Inglés.
In the study, the OCU highlights its texture, its mild citrus flavor and, due to its good value for money, it has been awarded the title of Master Purchase. You can find it in the supermarket for 17 euros/kg.
The best roscones de nata
The OCU has carried out an analysis of nine roscones de Reyes that can be bought in supermarkets in order to help consumers in their decision, specifically, they have focused on the cream-filled buns, the most popular.
In its comparative study, the organization has assessed the nutritional level, the quality of each ingredient, the presence of additives and the data provided by the labeling of each dessert. Taking this information into account, these are the two best roscones de Reyes filled with cream from the supermarket:
- El Corte Inglés Selection: “one more year”, the dessert offered by the group is once again the winner with a rating of 62 points (out of 100). Among its advantages, the OCU highlights its decoration, the tasting and the citrus and dairy aroma of the cream (40% of the dessert). Its price is 17 euros/kg.
- Lidl: Specifically, the one known as La Cestera, with a score of 55 points. The OCU has valued its low price compared to the rest and its “acceptable” quality; its good decoration and varied fruit. Its market price is 7.99 euros/kg.

It should be noted that in the analysis carried out by the Organization of Consumers and Users, it has been verified, in the opinion of expert pastry chefs, that none of the nine desserts analyzed “resembles the traditional roscón”.
This is because the cake that covers it is a light brioche and in some cases it contains aromas that are too “intense” and suggest that the best ones are made with butter.
However, the experts continue to detect in these studies of supermarket roscones the excessive presence of additives. “Although their number has been reduced from 15 to 11, on average, it is common to find colorings (especially in candied fruit), preservatives, emulsifiers and texture agents, often added in order to withstand freezing and subsequent thawing to which they have been subjected”, they point out.
