During the night between 18 and 19 November, 70 activists from the Extinction Rébellion association mobilized in Grenoble as part of the “This is not Versailles” operation. They put up more than 250 storefront posters and lit up billboards at night to raise awareness about saving energy.
“An indecent waste“. This is how Extinction Rebellion activists define enlightened ads. The organism, defined as “a civil disobedience movement in the fight against climate change“, then organized a “lights out” evening in Grenoble.
In the night between 18 and 19 November, in Grenoble, 70 activists proceeded to a massive collage of posters on illuminated windows or light panels installed at tram stops. A total of 250 signs and billboards were targeted by this nightly campaign. On these posters, entitled “Let’s turn them back on stars”activists point outthat one in five French people will be cold this winter due to too high energy prices” [..] “while advertising and some businesses continue to be turned on”. They also directly shut down several windows during the evening.
At the end of this mobilization, Extinction Rébellion reiterated its demands in a press release : “L‘total extinction of all bright advertisements as soon as closure and clearing of shops or around the clock for bus and tram stops, within two weeks for the SMMAG“(Joint Union of Mobility in the Grenoble Area, ed).
“If within a few weeks we have no reaction from the arrested actors, we will take other more engaging actions such as direct extinctionswarns one of the members of the Grenoble branch.
However, since when last October 7, a decree prohibits luminous advertising between 1 hour et 6h the morning in all cities of France except those installed in airports, train stations, metro or bus stations. “An ad effect that doesn’t solve the problem“ sweep activists, who regret too many exceptions to the rule and schedules that do not correspond to peak consumption of the network.
