This is not to be believed

It was in September that we wrote about graphics technology in The Callisto Protocol, which launches today.

It looks incredibly good

Smaller parts of the game use Unreal Engine 5, as we wrote at the time:

“First of all: yes, there will be support for ray tracing, both in shadows and reflections. The fact is that the game uses UE 4, but also UE 5, but the developers had to create their own version of UE 4 to get the ray tracing support they think the game deserves.

“Epic Games also helped Striking Distance Studios integrate UE 5 features into the studio’s special version of UE 4. According to the study, it’s not a few big things, but many improvements that improve performance. Lumen and Nanite are nowhere to be found.

When you look into a person’s eyes in the game, you see reflected optics. It’s a mini-detail, but it’s the little details that are actually very important.

It’s worth a look, but note spoilers near the end

In the compilation clip below, he starts off by showing how incredibly lifelike the faces are (starting with actor Josh Duhamel), an area of interest to the developers.

They also show how they transform the motion capture into the underlying graphics system and finally the gameplay is shown. In other words: avoid if you don’t want spoilers.

Our characters are the most realistic you’ll see in a game. They’re so good that when we first showed the game, a lot of people thought it was pre-ordered. So we had to tell them that “no, this is what our characters look like. This is what Josh Duhamel looks like.
