There are only so many journalists at a celebrity wedding: Robyn Peoples (26) and her partner Sharni Edwards (27) got married on Tuesday afternoon in the town of Carrickfergus, not far from Belfast. The two women are the first gay couple in conservative Northern Ireland.

The law on legalization of same-sex marriage in the British province only came into force on Monday. Sharni Edwards-Peoples spoke of a “completely surreal” event after the ceremony. “We are literally living our dream,” she said. “It’s incredible”.

She and her wife had not expected that they would be the first married gay couple in Northern Ireland’s history. This is an “absolute and happy coincidence,” said Edwards-Peoples.

Northern Ireland lagged behind in “marriage for all”
The two of you “fought long and hard for the opportunity to be considered equal,” said Robyn Edwards-Peoples. “And now the time has come and it is simply unique,” she added.
