Now that the cold has made its entrance again, you have to deal with ice on both the outside and inside of the car windows, but the latter is often the most difficult to get rid of.
The reason why ice forms on the inside of the windscreen is moisture. On sunny days, snow and ice on the floor of the car melts and condenses, turning into moisture that settles on the windows. When evening comes and the temperature drops below zero, the moisture turns to ice on the inside of the panes.
This kills the battery
There are ways to get rid of the problem. First of all, you must remove the moisture in the passenger compartment. Then give the panes a proper wash with salmiak water.
Use a towel
Start by knocking the snow off your shoes when you get into the car. The next time you scrape the ice off the windows, place a towel on top of the dashboard. It collects the ice and snow that falls. Take it with you out of the car.
The next step is to remove the snow and ice that is on the mats in the car. There will also be a lot of moisture in the fabric mats on the floor. A good layer of old newspapers under the mats will absorb most of this moisture. Change newspapers after a couple of days.
This can damage the car
Keep your fingers away
Now it’s time to check the button on the dashboard that controls the air conditioning. Normally, the air conditioning in the car will be able to remove a lot of humidity if it is driven in AUTO. Some facilities are not efficient enough. Do not switch off the air conditioning, as this will collect more moisture coming from the passengers in the car.
Also check the button for recirculating the passenger compartment air. Many people do not know that there is such a button which is designed to shut out polluted air in tunnels or the like. Someone has pushed it in, perhaps without knowing it, so that the air in the compartment is constantly recirculated. Then moisture and dew accumulate in the passenger compartment within a few minutes.
The salmiakk trick
Check that it is positioned so that air comes from the outside into the compartment. Then you can keep your fingers away from this button.
Finally; check that there is no luggage blocking the channels for the ventilation of the passenger compartment. On some cars, it is in the side wall of the boot
Butcher this one: – Just nonsense!
Once you’ve done this, there’s a good chance the moisture is gone. If you also wash the panes well with salmiak water, you get rid of dust and dirt that makes the ice easily stick to the panes. In addition, you get good visibility in the low spring sun.
