This is how we covered the presidential debate between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump | US Elections

Trump avoids direct answer to question about January 6 Capitol storming

The next question about the exchange of power in democracy is a very direct one for former President Trump. “Is there anything you regret about January 6th?” Trump first says that all he said was to go “peacefully and patriotically.” First speaking in the plural, before correcting himself. “We don’t… This group of people has been treated very badly.”

He then launched into his well-known and oft-repeated speech on immigration. The moderator interrupted him: “It’s a very simple question. Do you regret anything about January 6?”

Trump again dodged the question, comparing the Capitol rioters to the supposed millions of criminal immigrants committing crimes in the United States and to the Minneapolis protesters following the murder of George Floyd. After further prodding from the moderator, Trump went on to blame Nancy Pelosi for not accepting federal forces that he supposedly offered.

In her reply, Kamala Harris gives a personal response: “I was at the Capitol on January 6th. And on that day the President of the United States incited a violent mob to desecrate our nation’s capital. On that day 140 law enforcement officers were injured and some died. And the former President has been charged and tried for precisely that reason.” She went on to recall the far-right Charlottesville march of 2017 and comments made by Trump at the time.

Finally, after a back-and-forth of repetitive retorts, Trump invited Kamala Harris to go to Washington right then and there to sign a law closing the border completely.
