“Germany’s next top model” caused a small television sensation and selected transgender candidate Alex as the winner. The reactions on social media are rampant.

On Thursday evening, the four finalists Alex, Dascha, Romina and Soulin fought for the title of “Germany’s next top model”. Romina and Soulin were the first to say goodbye to model mom Heidi Klum and leave the final duel to curvy model Dascha and transgender Alex Mariah.
“Over 17,000 girls applied to me this year and you are my last two”, Heidi rejoiced over her final “Meeeeedchen”. Then came the all-important sentence: “Germany’s next top model in 2021 is Alex!” This decision was a bit of a sensation – and not because Alex, at 23 years old, was the oldest of the last remaining candidates. On Twitter, Alex’s victory is judged primarily as a statement for diversity – and celebrated frenetically.
But there are also some comments that show that there is still a long way to go when it comes to diversity. The GNTM surprise victory will not change that anytime soon – but at least point a new direction. ProSieben underlined this yesterday evening and immediately took a stand when some tasteless comments came up on Twitter.

Winking comments could also be found on Twitter. For example, some viewers took the chance and pointed out the similarity between Jennifer Lawrence and Alex. “Katniss Everdeen has won the Hunger Games”, it was said, for example, with a swipe in the direction of the fashion industry, in which the figure pressure is still enormous.
The fact that the favorite of the Twitter commentators won, of all people, caused astonishment. Usually it is more the other way around: A preferred candidate is expressed on Twitter – and in the end it becomes someone completely different.
The fact that there was also a small faux pas in the Instagram department at GNTM and a post was posted on the official account in which Alex was assigned “3rd place” caused amusement. Heidi Klum and the colleagues on social media will have to work on their communication.
Later, however, the editorial team managed to deliver a real post. “She’s already a star: Alex is Germany’s next top model,” it said in an Insta post. In the accompanying video you saw Alex behind the scenes of the show. “I’m confused, overwhelmed and still can’t believe it,” stammered the winner, visibly overwhelmed, into the microphone.
The victory, it was obviously a surprise not only for the audience – but above all for Alex himself.
