This is how thieves impersonate bankers and clean up accounts

The scheme of the frauds’ operation is usually similar – says Mariusz Chrzanowski from the Gdańsk police.

– The victim is contacted by a criminal who claims to be a bank employee, misleads his interlocutor, convincing that his data has been intercepted. The next step in the criminal game is to convince the victim to install an application on the smartphone or computer – says the officer.

It is a program that scammers can remotely access and take control of your computer or smartphone. There are also commands to accept the received SMS messages and finally log into your bank account. After installing the application, all operations, including account login, are visible to fraudsters. From now on, the perpetrators can act independently. They can withdraw all the money from the account and take out a loan. In a similar way, they lost 4,000 on Wednesday. PLN two residents of Gdańsk.

Luck, on the other hand, can be said about a resident of Oliwa in Gdańsk, who received an SMS with information about underpayment of the electricity bill. The resident of Oliwa did as the fraudsters wanted, clicked the link and filled the page with data. They failed only because the banking system operated efficiently and blocked further operations on the account.
