This is how they helped at the Poor House

On Tuesday, Dagbladet wrote about very long queues to the Poor House, in the Greenland camp in Oslo.

– We can not look at this. We act immediately, says PR and communications manager Calle Hägg in Rema 1000, when Dagbladet makes contact.

– Never seen anything like it

Filmmaker and Oslo citizen Nadina Helen Bakos released one this week video on Facebook, which shows a large number of people waiting for a hot meal.

Bakos lives right next to the Poor House, which is an organization for the poor. She announces that she has never seen anything like it before.

NOT ENOUGH FOOD: We are working really hard at Fattighuset in Oslo towards the last opening day before Easter, Wednesday. More than 500 people are expected outside their premises in Greenland, and many of those present have to leave without dinner.

– Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday there is a queue at the poorhouse for people to pick up food, and as long a queue as there is now, I have never seen before. I think it is absolutely awful that there are so many people who need help, Bakos says in the video.

Want to contribute

Several Rema 1000 stores collaborate with Fattighuset as usual, but have, after seeing the pictures in Dagbladet, mobilized.

– As a result of the precarious situation, we have gone out of our way to encourage all our Oslo stores to contribute extra to the important work of helping the most needy in the city this Easter, says Calle Hägg.

This means that the shops are encouraged to contact the Poor House.

– And we have encouraged the Poor House to contact us. We are acting immediately, and are now stepping up our work towards the Poor House, says Hägg.

He insists that it is a complex situation, because the store activity is already in high gear before the Easter holidays.

The poorhouse says that they have a lot of bread and sweets, but little dinner food, to hand out. They therefore have a great need for dinner items.

– This is the most effective way to act, in the situation we are in. To be able to help quickly enough, we believe this is the best solution to do it.

– What kind of goods can you deliver?

– We give away goods we have too much of, goods we see we can dispose of, but now we want to strengthen the work further. It is a very demanding time, says Hägg.

The poorhouse: – Got more food

Press contact for the Poor House, Sverre Rusten, tells Dagbladet that on Tuesday afternoon they received several new inquiries from people who want to help.

– There are several who have contacted us today, and people have asked for Vipps numbers and we have already had food delivered to the door, says Rusten.

Rusten says that Fattighuset usually has agreements with various individual shops in Oslo, which they pick up food from several times a week.

– We have fixed agreements with shops, and there are often individual situations where we are contacted by shops or companies that want to provide food, he says.

– Hardly an immediate consequence

Wednesday 31 March will be the last day before Easter where the Poor House will be open before they close for the holidays.

Rusten previously stated to Dagbladet that they expect long queues on Wednesday, and that there are several hungry people who thus have to wait a week before they can return to the premises in the Greenland camp for a free meal.

But despite many inquiries to the organization on Tuesday, Rusten is not sure that it will have any effect on Wednesday’s distribution of food.

– We have received some food at the door today, which has an immediate consequence. But many of those who have called and said that they want to get an agreement, will probably not have time to give their contributions by tomorrow. But it is of course very positive that many have made contact, and we have received over 30 inquiries today. The common denominator was that they wanted to help us in different ways, says Rusten.

The poorhouse tries to the best of its ability to provide food to everyone who shows up for a meal on Wednesdays and Fridays. The Poor House usually distributes clothes, helps with counseling and is a social offer. But in recent months, they have had to step down to just food distribution.

Rusten has previously estimated that around 500 people will visit the Poor House on Wednesday for a hot meal, but is not sure if they will have enough food to feed everyone who shows up.

– Everything is uncertain. Also how many come, Rusten concludes.
