According to the preliminary results of the summer 2024 religious school survey, young people gave the religious school a commendable school rating of 9–.

The results of the five most popular statements in the Rippikoulu survey have remained as positive as before, and in some cases they have even improved, the Church’s communications bulletin says.

This is in spite of the fact that the past high school summer has been overshadowed by several conflicts. During the summer, Iltalehti reported on a total of seven cases in which either the camp director, a church employee or the campers were involved in an incident.

Reasons for a bad experience

During the summer, a total of 16,123 religious school students answered the survey. In the annual seminary school survey, statements are presented, which young people can answer on a scale of 1–7.

The percentages below show the proportion of respondents who agreed with the statement (on a scale of 5–7).

94 percent felt safe at the religious school. 93 percent of the young people who answered said that they had fun and had a good time.

90 percent of the respondents felt that they could be themselves at the religious school, and according to 88 percent, the team spirit in the group was good.

– Only 3–4 percent of young people disagreed with these statements (on a scale of 1–3). However, this group includes almost a couple of thousand young people. Special attention must be paid to their encounter and experience in religious school, says an expert in the development of religious school and church education in the press release Mikko Wirtanen From the Church Board.

According to Wirtanen, there can be many reasons for a bad experience, such as one’s own motivation, a challenging life situation or the fact that a good team spirit has not been formed.

“You have to learn a lesson”

According to the results, the abuses and failures of the employees in the religious schools that were exposed to the public during the summer have not affected the overall assessment of a large number of people.

– Lessons must still be learned from these cases, says Wirtanen in the press release.

The importance of the Safe parish website and other guidelines is emphasized even more precisely in parishes and dioceses.

– The goal is to organize a safe camp environment, and the parishes already have comprehensive guidelines and good practices to ensure this. Nevertheless, conflicts arise and mistakes are made. It is the duty of the instructors and the employer to always react quickly, and the police, on the other hand, investigate possible criminal suspicions. This ensures legal protection for all parties.

In 2023, 47,980 young people attended seminary, of which 1,175 joined the church during seminary. The attendance statistics of the current year’s religious schools will be published in the spring of 2025.
