(CNN Spanish) – The president of U.SDonald Trump was acquitted this wednesday of the two charges of political judgment that weighed against him: abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. The majority of Republican senators voted in favor of the president’s innocence, with a result 52-48 for the first position and 53-47 for the second.
With this acquittal they end almost five months after the investigation and trial process political, which arose from the denunciation of an informant by the comments of Trump to the president of Ukraine during the summer. However, reactions to the decision made by the Senate have not been long in coming. These are the main ones.
President Trump himself was among the first to react: as usual he did it on his Twitter account by retweeting a video from a cover of Time magazine that shows posters of the Trump campaign of 2024, 2028 and beyond.
He then reported that will make a public statement this Thursday at noon from the White House “to discuss the victory of our country over the farce of political judgment.”
For its part, the president of the House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, issued a post-acquittal statement in which she affirmed that “Today, the president and Republicans of the Senate have normalized anarchy and rejected the system of checks and balances of our Constitution. ” And then he added: “The president will boast that he has been acquitted. There can be no acquittal without a trial, and there is no trial without witnesses, documents and evidence. By suppressing the evidence and rejecting the most basic elements of a fair process, the Republican Senate became an accomplice willing to cover up the president. ”
The Democrats had requested that the political trial process include witnesses and documents, however, last week the Senate voted 49-51 to block this possibility, with what was expected, the end of the process and an acquittal of Trump would begin.
The day before the acquittal, during the State of the Union, Pelosi and Trump staged two telling moments about the tension in American politics: when the president entered the chamber to give his speech he refused to shake hands with the Democratic leader – leaving her with an outstretched hand. And then, when the president concluded his intervention Pelosi He tore the copy of the speech in his hands.
Another person who reacted was former presidential candidate and former secretary of state Hillary Clinton, who was Trump’s rival in November 2016. On his Twitter account he published: “When the president’s political trial began, the Republican senators vowed to defend the Constitution. Today, 52 of them voted to betray that oath … and all of us. ”
