(CNN Español) — With almost 40% of the world’s COVID-19 deaths, the transmission of the coronavirus in the Americas “is far from being controlled,” said Carissa Etienne, director of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) last week.
As governments move forward with their vaccination campaigns, several countries in the region continue to register high death rates from the pandemic.
This is how the week of May 17 begins in some of the countries most affected by the pandemic in Latin America.
Mexico
The Ministry of Health of Mexico reported last week that the Federal Commission for the Protection against Sanitary Risks released the first batch of Cansino vaccines against covid-19 packaged in Mexico for emergency use in the country.
On Saturday, a shipment of 35,000 packaged doses of CanSino’s vaccine and about 290,000 doses of active substances to be packaged in the country arrived, according to the Ministry of Foreign Relations.
4.4 million doses of CanSino have already been packaged in Mexico.
In addition, starting this week, those between 50 and 59 years old can already be vaccinated.

Colombia
Colombia already has more than 81,000 deaths from covid-19.
On Saturday, with 530 deaths, the country broke its daily record for deaths from coronavirus, according to the Health Ministry.
As of May 15, more than 7.3 million doses of coronavirus vaccines had been applied, with 2.8 million second doses already inoculated.

Peru
The Ministry of Health of Peru is evaluating the request of the Peruvian Football Federation to vaccinate the members of the national team that will participate in the 2021 Copa América of Conmebol.
This was reported by the ministry in a May 13 statement. Although he stated that “according to information from ñla Conmebol, ‘vaccination is not mandatory in any way and the player who chooses not to be immunized will not be penalized or excluded from competitions.'”
Ecuador
The Sputnik V vaccine against covid-19 was approved for emergency use in Ecuador, the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF) reported at the weekend.
Sputnik V has been approved in 66 countries.
Argentina
Argentina exceeded 70,000 deaths from covid-19.
As of May 15, more than 8 million people have received the first dose of the covid-19 vaccine in the country, according to the Twitter account of the Pink House.
