The second Advent weekend not only ensured full shops in Düsseldorf, but also full parking garages. According to the police, they were already at capacity in the city center early on Saturday afternoon. Traffic around the Christmas markets came to a partial standstill.
Despite the bad weather, the streets and pedestrian zones were packed. The police speak of “massive traffic disruptions” on Saturday. For example, around the Kö-Bogen tunnel, officers were on constant duty to regulate traffic. Likewise at the Lower Rhine Shipyard, where over 240 coaches were parked because of the Christmas business. The shopping weekend continued on Sunday: shops were open in five large parts of the city.
After the bargain days around Black Friday and St. Nicholas Day, the Christmas shopping season in Düsseldorf has now returned to a little more calm. The NRW trade association draws this conclusion after the second weekend in Advent. In large cities like Düsseldorf, retailers have recently been quite satisfied with the number of visitors, says Carina Peretzke from the trade association:
Buying gifts is still the focus; but also the preparations for the celebration at home, because decorative items and kitchen appliances are currently increasingly being sold over the counter. However, customers are still very price-conscious.
