Since 2019, there have been more women on the Zurich cantonal council than ever before, but women are still significantly underrepresented. This piece of music makes the differences audible.

Women and men politicize differently. This shows the NZZ analysis of the Zurich cantonal council. So there are not only typical men’s and women’s issues, the genders also contribute differently to the political process. Women, for example, submit more requests per capita, i.e. inquiries, motions, interpellations and postulates. On the other hand, men go to the lectern much more often. Much more often, the gender difference can not only be represented visually with graphics – as in this article – but can also be made audible. This process is called “sonification” when data is converted into sounds and music. In order to show the gender difference, we have converted all the requests to speak from a single cantonal council debate into a piece of music. What you hear in it:
