President Martti Ahtisaari died at the age of 86 on October 16, 2023. His state funeral was held exactly one year ago on Martti’s name day.
President Ahtisaari’s grave monument was announced today at the Hietaniemi cemetery. In addition to the decision-makers, the widow of President Ahtisaari participated in the event Eeva Ahtisaari and son Marko Ahtisaari.
Architect Harri Pakarinen designed monument is called Blessed. It is shaped like an olive leaf, which symbolizes The idea of the work is based on the Bible saying “blessed are the peacemakers”. The main material of the monument is Ylämaa green granite.
Ahtisaari was known for his work as an international peacemaker. He won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2008.

The unveiling ceremony of the monument was also attended by the President of the Republic Alexander Stubb and the Prime Minister Petteri Orpo (Kok), who gave speeches at the event.
