With just one lost set at the Australian Open, Novak Djokovic celebrated his 22nd Grand Slam victory in Melbourne. The Serb catches up with the Spaniard Rafael Nadal. He also ousted his compatriot Carlos Alcaraz from the top of the ATP world rankings.
After the three-hour final against Stefanos Tsitsipas, the 35-year-old fell to the ground crying. Congratulations followed from all sides. Late on Sunday evening, Roger Federer, who is in third place with 20 Grand Slam titles, also reported.
The Swiss shares the winning photo of the ATP on Instagram. He writes: “Another incredible achievement! Congratulations.”
The two tennis icons faced each other 50 times on the court, but apart from that they are friends. After the quarter-final win against Rublew, Djokovic said: “Let’s applaud Roger, tennis misses him.” He also challenged him to a ski race.
Personally, new pensioner Roger Federer could not attend the Australian Open. He already had commitments at Paris Fashion Week, where he sat front row with his wife Mirka. He saw pictures of it, said Djokovic. Federer was smartly dressed.
