With a specially dosed vaccine, the country has started vaccinating children. But is there enough vaccine at all – and how does one get an appointment?
This week, the corona vaccinations for children between the ages of five and eleven began in Bremen and Bremerhaven. Although the Standing Vaccination Commission did not make a general recommendation, it did recommend vaccination for children with previous illnesses and sick people in the vicinity. Bremen makes a vaccination offer for all children regardless of this. But many parents and guardians still wonder how they get an appointment – and whether there is enough vaccine for the children.
In the state of Bremen there is in fact not enough vaccine available for all children of this age range at the same time. Therefore, born in 2010 and 2011 are the first to be invited – but younger siblings from the age of five can also come at the agreed time and be vaccinated. The health department emphasizes that at least one parent or guardian must be present for the vaccination. An older sibling or a relative is not enough to accompany them.
Adults are not vaccinated at the children’s vaccination center. All appointments for adults already booked from December 13th for the vaccination center in Bremen-Mitte will take place in the new Am Brill vaccination center.
Pediatricians also vaccinate – especially children with previous illnesses
In future, it will be possible to vaccinate children from the age of five in the child vaccination center as well as with resident paediatricians. Stefan Trapp is the Bremen state chairman of the professional association of paediatricians (BVKJ). He also admits that not all practices can vaccinate immediately. Therefore, he thinks the vaccination center is a good cause. There the families would be advised by pediatricians. However, it is best to have children with particularly serious pre-existing conditions vaccinated by their own pediatricians, as they know the medical history.
Bremerhaven does not offer its own child vaccination center. There, the offer will be implemented through the vaccination practice in the Hanse Carré in the city center. Pediatricians are available for advice in the vaccination practice. The magistrate points out that the resident paediatricians also offer vaccinations immediately after consultation and appointment. How quickly this works, however, depends on the availability of the vaccine.
