Presentation for the first time on ORF
The reason: ORF III recorded the game schedule presentation for the season 20/21 of the new state opera director Bogdan Roscic for Sunday (April 26 / start at 9:30 p.m. / ORF III). Since it is not possible to hold this live in front of an audience due to the corona crisis, it will take place for the first time on ORF television – to be seen on Sunday, April 26, 2020, at 9.30 p.m. in ORF III.
New music director currently in Paris
General manager Alexander Wrabetz, himself a great fan of classical music, made this possible at short notice. The actual plan, which had been prepared for months, would have been for Roscic to present his program on the stage of the house – free of charge for anyone interested. One of his motto is: open opera for everyone. In addition to Bogdan Roscic, the designated music director Philippe Jordan, added from Paris, as well as the future director of the Vienna State Ballet Martin Schläpfer, provide video insights into the upcoming season. Anna Netrebko, who is stuck in Vienna with her husband Yusif and son Tiago because of the corona pandemic, has spontaneously agreed to “reopen” the opera – and says opposite “Today”: “As an opera singer you want to sing, it is our life. It is all the worse and sadder when you see such an empty house. My appearance is to show people that better times will come and everything will be fine.”
Netrebko: “Dear Vienna”
You yourself – found out “Today” – will become an integral part of Roscic’s new directorate. Netrebko himself does not want to anticipate the presentation on Sunday and encircles the facts literally as follows: “I love Vienna and I love the Vienna State Opera and it is a pleasure to work with Bogdan, whom I have known for a long time.” Small detail on the side: He was once their record manager.

The appearance and recording for ORF III took place under the strictest corona safety precautions. In addition to mouthguards, disinfection dispensers were installed everywhere. As with all others, Anna Netrebko was measured at the entrance fever – reassuring result: 36.4 degrees. Nevertheless, the current situation is likely to drain many people’s nerves. Bogdan Roscic: “We all long for the day when the first bar of music from the orchestra pit will finally sound.”

The government (which also owns the State Opera) will only decide whether it is actually possible to sing in autumn. As “Today” ten premieres are planned for the coming season – whenever it starts. Recently there were only six (plus a children’s opera). The prices should be reduced noticeably. In the 2018/19 season, prices had been raised by an average of five percent. This time only the artist density will increase. The greatest stars in the classical world will perform under Bogdan Roscic in Vienna. In addition to Netrebko, this will include Elina Garanca, Jonas Kaufmann and Juan Diego Flórez.
