Employees are often unhappy with their income. A gross salary is negotiated with the employer, but what is left of it net?
Munich – Employees can use a gross-net calculator to calculate how much money will end up in their account at the beginning of the month. From January 1, 2025, thanks to the announced relief measures, employees should actually have more net of their gross – will that remain the case despite the traffic light break?
Gross-net calculator from Stiftung Warentest – this is how much money you have left
The new gross-net calculator was presented by Stiftung Warentest. It was designed for the year 2025, in which the tax burden should decrease, as can be seen from a planned change in the law. On the other hand, there may be rising social security contributions, and health insurance companies in particular could increase their additional contributions. For many people, it may not be so easy to calculate their actual net salary. The calculator should help with this.

Stiftung Warentest warns: “Especially with higher gross earnings, the monthly net income in 2025 can also remain below the current value.” The traffic light government wants to counteract this in December 2024: “The Bundestag has agreed that the basic allowance for 2024 will be retroactively increased from 11,604 to 11,784 euros will be increased.” In the last month of the year, 180 euros more will end up in the account if the Federal Council accepts the proposal agrees.
More net from gross – will the plans remain in place despite the traffic light break?
In order to calculate the salary from January 2025, various information must be entered into the gross-net calculator. The salary can be calculated per month or even for the entire year. To do this, you must enter your gross wages from January 2025, the year of birth, the tax class, and the number of employees Kinderthe federal state, the type of health insurance and whether you pay church tax and pension insurance.
When specifying the additional health insurance contribution, 1.7 percent is automatically entered; for many health insurance companies, this could rise to 2.5 percent from 2025. According to some studies, social security contributions could even be increased to 50 percent in the coming decades.
