The “first aid” for the pillars of the Parliament building, which were dented with red paint, has now been done, says the administrative director of the parliament Pertti Rauhio.
– The so-called water and soap phase has already been implemented with the help of personal cranes. But that is only the first step in the cleaning work, Rauhio says.
Cleaning paint from a stone building is laborious, even though the paint itself was water-soluble. In addition, the price tag of the operation will not be the smallest.

The House of Parliament is built of granite. It is a porous stone material, into which the dye may well sink into the faucet.
According to Rauhio, the situation will be checked again tomorrow and experts will come to assess whether there are traces left in the building.
– But I can already state that there will be no traces of it. The building will be cleaned, no matter what technical solution it requires, says Rauhio.
– We do not accept the fact that some color remains on it.
Rauhio says that similar meticulous work has never been done to the Parliament building before. Rauhio has worked as the administrative director of the parliament for 14 years.
– After all, those columns have been climbed at times, but that building has never been vandalized like that before. The last sign of this kind of hard work seems to be from the time of the war. The granite still shows traces of those blows, Rauhio thinks.
The demolition of the parliament building was done in seconds. Usually, for example, doing graffiti on a building is difficult because the area is guarded and the activity is quickly noticed.
– Yes, we will be there very quickly if something suspicious happens. As we were now, says Rauhio.

What does the whole thing cost?
Rauhio says that he cannot estimate the final amount of the costs yet. But at least a small amount of money won’t get you through the cleaning.
– We don’t know yet, how much this will cost all in all. But for renting these personal lifts alone, we are talking about thousands of euros, Rauhio answers.
– And there’s another thing that even our own people don’t clean the exterior just for the sake of a hobby, so that’s also included in the costs.
Can you even estimate what the total price tag for the cleaning operation will be?
– According to my estimate, it could very well be a five-figure sum. But this is perhaps more of a guess than an estimate, says Rauhio.
Will the washing operation now be paid for by taxpayers?
– We look through all these costs. After that, the parliament will not only demand punishment for the perpetrator, but also demand damages.
