Cologne – From June 1, 2022, all local and regional transport by bus and train can be used nationwide for three months for only 9 euros per month. The 9-euro ticket is part of a large relief package from the federal government and is intended to make buses and trains more attractive for people, especially in view of the high fuel prices. At the same time, the 9-euro ticket also opens up unimagined possibilities for long journeys in Germany. Because even popular routes such as Hamburg – Munich or Berlin – Cologne can suddenly be traveled for only 9 euros per month. Particularly practical: local buses and trains from the respective cities are included in the price.
9-euro ticket: holiday trips possible for 9 euros
The 9-euro ticket will be introduced on June 1st and will then be valid for three months, i.e. until August 31st. With the ticket, all buses and trains in regional and local transport in Germany can be used. Only long-distance traffic, such as the ICE or IC of Deutsche Bahn, is not included.

But even with regional trains, very long distances can be covered nationwide. If you don’t have a problem with train journeys or multiple changes, you can cover long distances for very little money for three months from June. This is how you get to Berlin, Cologne, Munich or Hamburg with the 9-euro ticket. 24RHEIN uses various examples to show how this could work.

If you want to get from Cologne to Munich with the inexpensive monthly ticket, you can do it in around nine and a half hours if you only use local transport. There are four changes along the route.

In around nine to ten hours you can also get from Cologne to Berlin by public transport. Many different routes are possible here. The fastest journey takes 8:40 hours, but there are also seven changes, which could be stressful under certain circumstances. A little more pleasant: With only three changes, you can reach Berlin from Cologne in 9:43 hours.

If you prefer to travel from Cologne to Hamburg, you can do it in just over six hours using local transport. With three changes, the journey from the cathedral city to the Hanseatic city is possible in around 6:20 hours.

As in the opposite example, there are several options for getting from Berlin to Cologne by public transport. All take around eight and a half to nine and a half hours, with three to seven changes. There are also the fewest changes on the route from Berlin to Cologne via Magdeburg, Braunschweig and Bielefeld.

The Berlin – Munich route can also be reached by local transport in just under nine hours. The Oktoberfest starts on September 17, 2022, a good two weeks after the planned end of the 9-euro ticket, but there are also many reasons for a trip to the Bavarian state capital in summer.
