Christopher Nolan is done with Warner Bros., it seems. Not only that, we now know what the director’s new project will be.
According to Deadline, Nolan is busy looking for a studio for his next film, one about World War II. With this he visits several film studios, while he has always worked with Warner Bros. worked together. However, that relationship soured by the way his new film Tenet was released.
WWII
Nolan and Warner Bros. competed over the release of Tenet. Nolan insisted that the film be released in theaters and the studio decided to grant that wish. But it was not a success, causing the relationship between Warner Bros. and Nolan soured further. After that, Nolan also called HBO Max the worst streaming service ever, because the film studio had decided to release all its 2021 films simultaneously in theaters and on the streaming service.
And now it seems that the two are not going to work together anymore. Nolan will be working on a film about the atomic bomb, according to Deadline. The film focuses on J. Robert Oppenheimer and his role in developing the atomic bomb.
Rumor has it that actor Cillian Murphy one of the main roles.
Nolan previously made the war film Dunkirk. It seems likely that this World War II film will have a similar style and will therefore focus less on science fiction or fantasy as a whole series of previous films by Nolan.
Should Nolan indeed choose another studio, it will mark the end of a twenty-year collaboration between the studio and the director. Netflix, Amazon and Apple also appear to be competing for the film, but they will then have to give in to Nolan’s desire to initially release his films exclusively in the cinema for a longer period of time.
Then it seems more likely that rival studios like Universal, Paramount, Sony or Disney will make the film.
