After the phenomenal performance in Indian Wells, the Polish woman became the second rocket in the world, compensating for the historical achievement of Agnieszka Radwańska. When Świątek officially appeared in the second place in the ranking, hardly anyone expected that a few days later she would move even higher and almost immediately become the world’s “number one”.
All thanks to the sensational decision of the current leader – Ashleigh Barty. Last Wednesday, the Australian shocked the tennis world by announcing that she would end her professional career immediately. The decision of the only 25-year-old player was met with great disbelief. However, Barty herself stated that she wanted to “pursue other dreams”. In the media, however, information appeared that the tennis player from the Antipodes intends to get married and will soon give birth to a child.
At the same time, Barty appealed to the WTA to remove her from the list of players. In this situation it became clear that someone else would take her place, and Świątek became the main “favorite”. For this to happen, however, one of two scenarios had to be fulfilled – the 20-year-old had to win her first round match in Miami against Viktorija Golubic or count on Paul Bados not winning the final. The Polish woman decided to take matters into her own hands and, without waiting for what her rival would do, defeated Golubice 6: 2, 6: 0 in great style, thus securing the first place in the latest edition of the WTA ranking.
