JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com – Boyband from South Korea BTS again trusted to give remarks at the 75th General Assembly of the United Nations (UN), Wednesday (23/9/2020)
The seven BTS members told stories of their inspirational struggles in facing the Covid-19 pandemic that has hit the world.
UNICEF hopes that BTS’s messages will be able to encourage and spread hope for young generations around the world.

The following is the content of BTS’s complete speech on United Nations General Assembly, Wednesday (23/9/2020).

It is an honor for us to have this rare opportunity to speak at the 75th General Assembly of the United Nations.
My name is RM, the leader of the BTS group. Two years ago here, I said your names. I encourage you to give me the opportunity to hear your voices. And I fill myself with imagination.

As a child from a small town in Ilsan, Korea, as a young man standing at UNGA, as a citizen of this world, I imagined the endless possibilities before all of us and my heart was beating fast.
But Covid-19 was beyond my imagination. Our world tour was completely canceled, all our plans fell through, and I felt alone.
I looked up at the sky but couldn’t find any stars at night.

I feel hopeless, everything feels broken. I can only look out of my window. I can only go to my room.
Yesterday I was singing and rocking with fans from all over the world and now my world is conical into just a room.
And then my friends pulled my hand. We reassured each other and talked about what we can do together.

Life is simple, maybe for the first time. It was a very precious time, not expected but welcomed nonetheless.
I’m getting used to seeing the whole world sink in an instant. When I was on tour, I stood in the bright light and shouted out loud.
But when I returned to my room, the world felt cramped. My room is very narrow but my world and the world we have reached are far and wide.

In this world we have instruments, namely mobile phones and our fans.

But this time it felt different, I felt more lonely and smaller. Why? I thought about it for a long time. I think maybe it’s because I’m becoming more and more difficult to imagine.
I felt frustrated and sad, but I took my notebook, wrote songs, and thought about who I was before.

I thought, ‘if I give up here, then I’m not the star of my life. It’s an act that great people do.

I don’t know who was first. We embraced all of these emotions and seven of us started making music together.
This is where the music comes from, and it keeps us honest.
Life is unpredictable. We don’t know all the answers.

I know where I want to go, but I don’t know how to get there.
All I do to be at this point is believe in myself, do what I do best, and love what is done.

I found again the people I love. The members (BTS), my family, and my friends. I found again the music I love and I found myself.
Thinking about the future and working hard is important. But respecting yourself, cheering on, and keeping yourself happy are the most important things.

In this world full of uncertainty, we must respect the interests of me, you, and us.
That’s the message from Love Myself we’ve been talking about for the last three years. That’s the message in the lyrics of our song Dynamite. I’m diamond, you know I glow up.

One night we worked together. RM said he couldn’t see the stars anymore but I saw my face drawn in the window. I saw all our faces.
Our songs become stories we want to share with others.

We live in uncertainty, but really, nothing has changed.
If there’s something I can do, if our voices can give strength to others, then that’s what we want and that’s what we’re going to keep doing.

Towards the end of the video, RM appeared again with a message. When I started to feel lost, I thought back to my face in the window, just like Jungkook said. I remember the words I said here two years ago, “Love yourself, speak yourself”.
Now more than ever, we must try to remember who we are, and face who we are.

We must try to love ourselves and re-imagine the future. BTS will always be with you.
Tomorrow may be dark, painful, and difficult for us. We may trip or fall.
But the stars shine brightly when the night is so dark.

If all the stars are hiding, we will have the moon illuminate us. Even if the moon is dark, let our faces be the light that helps find our way.
We huddle together exhausted, but let’s dream again. Let’s dream about a future when the world is no longer in our small room.
Maybe it feels like the night never ends and we will always feel alone but the night is always dark before the dawn arrives.
