The Republican Party intends to tighten control over military supplies. Republicans say Congress should “hold accountable” the Biden administration for saving Ukraine.
Representatives of the Republican Party of the United States stated the need to more tightly control the supply of weapons to Ukraine. Such precautionary measures are designed to stop the unwanted spread of American weapons around the world, such as writes Washington Post.
The publication claims that under President Biden, America has pledged nearly $20 billion in military aid to Ukraine. In this regard, the US State Department and the Pentagon intend to resort to additional measures to prevent weapons from falling into the wrong hands.
The authors of the article note that most American politicians support measures to tighten control over military supplies to Ukraine. However, experts warn that “perfect accounting” is impossible under current conditions.
“In any war, there can be missteps and misallocation of supplies,” says Rep. and veteran Jason Crowe.
Elias Yousif, a researcher on the global arms trade at the Stimson Center, also believes that monitoring the intended use of weapons has some drawbacks. He stressed that Washington should objectively evaluate its capabilities in this regard.
In order to more effectively monitor arms transfers, the House of Representatives passed a bill requiring the Pentagon and inspectors general to submit reports on transfers of military items.
“Taxpayers deserve to know investments are going where they should be,” Crow says.
At the same time, the veteran says that the United States does not intend to monitor every detail of American weapons on the Russian-Ukrainian front. He clarifies that the primary purpose of the monitoring is to make sure the Russian military does not receive large quantities of US weapons.
“We are not playing a mission of excellence here. This is brutal ground warfare on a large scale – house by house, street by street, trench by trench,” concluded the expert.
The Pentagon notes that Ukraine has not provided significant reasons for concern to date. According to representatives of the department, the Ukrainian authorities regularly report on the use of American weapons.
