This Instagram feature protects your photos and stories from hackers

One of the threats that users face Instagram who have lost access to their account due to hacker and the loss of photos and videos that they have published on the platform. Often, in fact, those who illegally take possession of someone else’s account do so with the aim of acquiring their followers but carrying on messages and contents different from those of the legitimate owner, which are precisely eliminated. From today there is an additional security measure within the social network that will allow users – once they have regained access to their profile – to immediately repopulate it with the photos and videos that had been deleted: it is called Recently deleted, and it is a section of the social network that holds and temporarily stores all the recently deleted posts.

How the Recently Deleted section of Instagram works

The new section – explained Instagram with a post on his blog – behaves like a kind of basket: that is, it collects all the contents that are deleted from your profile. From photos to stories, passing through Reel and IGTV videos, all the material that is deleted from the profile is not immediately deleted from the Instagram servers but moved to the Recently deleted section where stay for 30 days before disappearing. The novelty allows users to change their mind about publishing content even after deleting it, but it has a particularly important meaning for those who lose access to their account due to external intrusions.

Protection against hackers

The Recently Deleted section is protected by identity verification measures. Whenever you try to restore content within the section, and especially every time you try to permanently delete a content in advance of the 30-day stay time, Instagram will ask the user confirmation that you really are the owner account: this will be done by alternative methods than the usual username and password – which in a hacker attack are supposed to have been stolen.

This way, even if profiles are compromised by a hacker attack, the damage will be temporary. Affected users will be able to return their pages to their original appearance once they have regained access – with the help of the moderators and tools inside the platform.
