The heating season in Klaipėda and Gargždai, which ended on April 29, was cheaper than a year ago. This was due to the falling prices of natural gas and biofuel used for heat production, as well as heat purchased from independent heat producers.
The price has been steadily decreasing
In the heating season of 2023-2024, the average price of heat in the port city was 6.79 ct/kWh (without VAT), which is 19 percent less compared to the previous heating season, when heat cost 8.38 ct/kWh (without VAT).
“By the end of 2023, the prices of biofuel and gas have dropped significantly and this has created favorable conditions for a significant reduction in the prices of supplied heat. One of the company’s strategic directions is to ensure low heat prices for customers and, compared to the previous heating season, we managed to achieve this,” said Rolandas Baltuonis, general director of AB Klaipėdos energija, which supplies centralized heating and hot water to residents of the port city and Gargžda.
In the 2023-2024 heating season, the national average heat price ranged from 6.44 ct/kWh (without VAT) to 7.6 ct/kWh (without VAT). Meanwhile, the price of heat supplied by Klaipėda Energija to the residents of the port city and Gargždai in October, November, December and January, February and April of 2024 was lower than the average price of heat in the country, and in March of 2024 it more or less corresponded to the national average. The price varied between 5.48 ct/kWh (without VAT) and 7.49 ct/kWh (without VAT).
Cheap energy resources
During the heating season, about 75 percent of the total heat price is made up of the variable part – the costs of biofuel, gas, electricity, water and other variable costs, as well as the costs of heat superkama from independent heat producers.
“Klaipėdos energija” bought biofuel for 23.68 EUR/MWh, which is 53.8 percent cheaper than a season ago. In 2022-2023, the price of biofuel reached 51.26 EUR/MWh. Meanwhile, natural gas cost EUR 51.5/MWh this season – 58.5 percent cheaper than a year ago, when the price reached EUR 124.14/MWh. And the price of purchased heat from independent heat producers fell to 3.52 ct/kWh, which is 20.5 percent less than the season a year ago, when it reached 4.43 ct/kWh.
Got smaller bills
Falling heat prices also reduced heating bills. During the heating period from October 2023 to March 2024, residents of a standard 50 square meter 2-room apartment in a newly built or completely renovated building received an average bill of 30.40 euros. This is 18.2 percent lower than in the heating season of 2022-2023, when the average amount of bills received was 37.20 euros.
Owners of old-built, unrenovated houses of the same area received an average of 57.80 euros in heating bills this season, which is 16.15 percent lower compared to last season, when they received an average of 69.20 euros. The size of the heating bills was also influenced by the habits and behavior of the inhabitants, the condition of the buildings and the outdoor air temperature.
The work continues in the summer
The work does not stop after the end of the heating season. “Klaipėdos energija” will continue to supply heat energy for preparing hot water to the consumers of Klaipėda and Gargžda.
“During the heat supply, all deficiencies become apparent, so at the end of the heating season, hydraulic tests are carried out in order to repair the found defects and cracks in the pipelines caused by corrosion. Devices, biofuel boilers will also be repaired, measuring devices will be checked and all scheduled maintenance and repair work will be carried out, so that we are ready to reliably supply heat energy to consumers by the start of the new heating season,” emphasized R. Baltuonis.
Although the heating season has already ended by the decision of the municipalities of Klaipėda and Gargžda, heat consumers can stop heating at their own discretion, without violating the established hygiene norms. For this, you need to contact the house administrator and get the majority of the owners (50 proc. + 1) consent.
