This Healthy Diet Helps Fight Depression in Young Men

JawaPos.com – Symptoms of depression can happen to anyone. The causes can vary, from prolonged stress, pent-up emotions due to toxic relationships with coworkers, bosses and partners. Until a bad diet and lifestyle. When they switch to a healthy diet, it can help manage symptoms of depression, says a study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. Depression is a significant risk factor for suicide and the leading cause of death in young adults.

As quoted from Science Daily, Monday, in the study, researchers from the University of Technology Sydney conducted a randomized control trial for 12 weeks. Lead researcher Jessica Bayes said this was the first randomized clinical trial to assess the impact of the Mediterranean diet on depressive symptoms in young men aged 18-25 years.

“Those assigned to the Mediterranean diet were able to significantly change their original diet, under the guidance of a nutritionist, in a short period of time. This suggests doctors and psychologists should consider referring young depressed men to a dietitian or dietitian as an important component of treating clinical depression.”

The diet used in this study was rich in colorful vegetables, legumes and whole grains, fish, olive oil, and nuts without salt.

“The main focus is on improving diet quality with fresh whole foods while reducing intake of fast food, sugar and processed red meat,” says Bayes.

According to him, there are many scientific reasons why food affects mood. For example, about 90 percent of serotonin, a chemical that helps people feel happy, is made in the gut by gut microbes. There is evidence these microbes can communicate to the brain via the vagus nerve or gut-brain axis.

“To have beneficial microbes, we need to provide them with the fiber found in nuts, fruits and vegetables,” says Bayes.

According to studies, about 30 percent of depressed patients fail to respond adequately to standard treatments for major depressive disorder such as cognitive behavioral therapy and antidepressant medications.
