West Flanders –
The tragic incident occurred at a football match in Belgium. There was a goalkeeper who died on the field, shortly after brushing off the penalty.
The incident occurred in the West Brabant Province Division Two match, which brought together Winkel Sport B vs Westrozebeke. The match, which was held in Sint-Eloois-Winkel, was initially fierce. At the start of the second half, the sad moment happened.
The away team initially gets a penalty. Winkel Sport B goalkeeper, Arne Espeel, can keep the goal well.
He was able to parry the ball, but soon it collapsed on the field. Espeel fainted, and had to get help.
The medical team came, brought a pacemaker, and rushed him to the hospital. Espeel was helpless shortly after arriving at the hospital.
The cause of death has yet to be determined, and it is planned that an autopsy will be performed on Monday (13/2) local time. Winkel Sport B itself has released a statement of sorrow.
“Winkel Sport is deeply saddened by the sudden passing of goalkeeper Arne Espeel. We wish Arne’s family and friends their condolences for this great loss. Football is temporarily forgotten,” the club said, reported by the Mirror.
Winkel Sport B assistant, Stefaan Dewerchin, tells the chronology. He said Espeel suddenly fell and then became unconscious.
“The ball was still in play. Our keeper got up as fast as he could to receive the ball, but then he went down. It was horrible to watch. All the players huddled together after the incident. When the message came our keeper died it was an incredible heavy blow. I think some players still don’t realize what’s really going on,” Dewerchin said.
RIP, Arne Espeel.
