The MGCS: a revolution in land combat

Launched in 2017, the Main Ground Combat System (MGCS) program is the result of close collaboration between France and Germany. Designed to replace the Leopard 2 and Leclerc tanks, the MGCS is not just a traditional heavy tank. It integrates the latest technological innovations to become a multi-platform combat system, combining a large-calibre main tank with various modules such as heavy armoured vehicles equipped with missiles and robotic support vehicles. This interconnected network of weapons represents a radical break with conventional approaches.

The heaviest current tank (75 t) would fit in the trunk of the heaviest tank of all time of 188 tons

A key step in the development of MGCS

The recent meeting between Sébastien Lecornu and Boris Pistorius, French and German Ministers of the Armed Forces, marked a decisive turning point for the MGCS. Their discussion resulted in the signing of a roadmap concretizing the “common operational requirements” that will guide the development of the various technologies involved. This historic collaboration underlines a shared desire to push the project towards a concrete realization by 2040-2045.

Why is the MGCS nicknamed the “Tank of the Future”?

The integration of artificial intelligence sets the MGCS apart as a forward-thinking platform. AI will support crews by improving intelligence, planning and coordination, while enabling rapid and strategic decisions on the battlefield. In addition, unprecedented hyperconnectivity will enable the sharing of vital information in real time via a combat cloud, optimizing coordination between different units.

MGCS’s Expanded Combat Capabilities

The MGCS promises impressive firepower and combat range, capable of targeting enemies up to 8,000 meters, double the current capacity of the Leclerc tank. Its additional modules provide agility and diversity of attack that will significantly complicate the enemy response. Its observation capacity extended to 10,000 meters, combined with active camouflage systems and reinforced armor, will ensure superior protection of crews against various threats.

The Future of Land Combat

The MGCS is more than just a tank; it is envisioned as the heart of an integrated combat ecosystem that will redefine land warfare. By merging technological innovation with advanced military tactics, the MGCS sets the stage for Project Titan, which will take over from the Scorpion system, envisioning an even more advanced collaborative combat approach that integrates joint and combined forces dimensions.

The United States is acquiring this high-tech anti-tank missile for the staggering sum of 1.3 billion euros, which could change the international situation.

The MGCS embodies the future of land combat, combining cutting-edge technology and military strategy to create a system capable of dominating the battlefields of tomorrow.
