The Bayport Polymers joint venture, or Baystar for short, is operated in equal parts by Borealis and Totalenergies. With the commercial commissioning of the new ethane cracker, the company is aiming for a production capacity of one million tons of ethylene per year.
The project has an investment volume of US$2 billion and was built at Totalenergies’ refinery in Port Arthur, Texas, USA. The ethylene produced by the cracker will serve as feedstock for the existing Baystar polyethylene (PE) plants, as well as for the new Borstar technology polyethylene plant currently under construction in Bayport, Texas.
“I am very pleased with the commissioning of this new ethane cracker, which is an important milestone in our global expansion strategy with Baystar. We are proud to bring Borealis’ proprietary Borstar technology to North America for the first time. This enables Baystar to produce advanced polyethylene products for the most demanding applications,” explains Borealis CEO Thomas Gangl.

The start-up of the new ethane cracker is an important step for Baystar to become a fully integrated polyethylene company. The focus is on expanding the North American polymer market and intensifying partnerships.
The Baystar joint venture is the product of Borealis and Totalenergies’ growth ambitions in the US.
