This electric boat flies over water, literally. And it consumes very little

Electricity and (sea) water never got along particularly well. The new era has already begun, yes, but limited to land transport – and with some experimentation in the skies – but up to now, little has been said about navigation (some hybrid attempts). And not for lack of will, but rather for intrinsically technological and “physical” issues. There is the friction of the water from to defeat, an even tougher enemy than the friction that occurs for four-wheeled vehicles.

And then the problems identified so far regarding electric boats have concerned the consumption: the more friction there is, the more power is needed, and the more large batteries are required. In short, to date the results have been really poor, among other things reaching embarrassing autonomy compared to classic fuel-powered vehicles. The change of course, however, comes from Sweden, and precisely from Candela Speed Boat AB, a company that, among other things, also produces the P-30 boats for the Stockholm transport service.

Is called C-7 the invention of Candela, and is nothing more than a special electric hydrofoil of 7.7×2.4m which, thanks to its particular structure, it is able to reduce friction with water by 80% by literally flying over it, at the same time drastically reducing consumption: to cover each nautical mile you need 0.8kWh, equal to 0.2 liters of petrol. Speed, autonomy, stability and savings, all together. The tank the battery is 40kWh, reaches a maximum speed of 30 knots (about 55km / h) and, going on average at 22 knots it can cover up to 50 nautical miles: a record for an electric boat, even triple compared to the fastest electric boat on the market today. The management costs are 95% lower than a classic motor boat.

To ensure maximum efficiency the hydrofoil steering wheel it was made of carbon fiber, weighing just 1,350kg (-30% compared to a fiberglass boat). C-7 is a 2.0 hydrofoil, in the sense that it exploits a consolidated mechanical technology, updating it with a advanced system made up of sensors, hardware and software.

The six passengers (maximum) on board will not even notice that they are flying over the water, since in addition to total silence, maximum stability is guaranteed through a solution already used in fighters that regulates hulls immersed in water up to 100 times a second. Obviously, on such a technological vehicle, touchscreen control could not be missing: the diagonal is 12 “, and from there all the parameters and functions of the flying electric boat.
