This Monday, May 25, Marvel unveiled the first trailer for The Eternals (or The Eternals in original version). A first glimpse of the next MCU blockbuster expected in November and which will be directed by Chloé Zhao, already Oscar winner for her latest film, Nomadland. But besides the official footage from the film, this trailer offers us some clarification on the status of one of the iconic characters of the Avengers.
Marvel formalizes Steve Rogers’ status
Indeed, as you may have noticed in the final scene of this trailer, we can see the Eternals who are gathered around a meal when Sprite, played by Lia McHugh, asks who can become the next leader of the Avengers.
A question that is legitimate now that Captain America and Iron Man are no longer there. Except you will notice the subtlety: if we are clearly talking about Iron Man for the superhero played by Robert Downey Jr., regarding the character played by Chris Evans, he is referred to as Captain Rogers, the same rank as Steve Rogers in Captain America : First Avenger.
The trailer therefore informs us that from now on, the character will be called this way in the MCU. And this way of Naming him Captain Rogers ends any confusion that may have taken place with the series Falcon and the Winter Soldier on Disney +.
But then, why can’t Steve Rogers keep his superhero name when it is possible for Tony Stark? Quite simply becausecurrently, the one holding Captain America’s shield is none other than Sam Wilson. And Marvel has also confirmed that at this time it was indeed Sam Wilson who owned this title with the appearance of the character on the official pages.
So, calling him Captain Rogers like in the teaser, more confusion possible with Sam Wilson. In the future, if eventually Steve Rogers got back to the MCU, we could see the two characters coexist in the Marvel universe without wondering who is officially Captain America.
The Eternals will be released in theaters on November 5, 2021. The film follows on from the events ofAvengers : Endgame.
