This country has made the sale of the new iPhone and Apple Watch illegal

A country that completely bans the sale of powered devices is completely unprecedented. And yet, this decision results from a lack of investments made by Apple in the country even though the firm had promised…

To free itself from China, Apple had promised to invest massively in other Asian countries. Among these, Indonesia. The largest economy in Southeast Asia, the country has a young population (100 million Indonesians are under 30, or more than a third, Editor’s note.) which, of course, invests massively in new technologies. For its part, Apple had committed, through its CEO Tim Cook, to invest $109 million in local infrastructure, including production centers and the construction of the country’s first Apple Store.

However, the firm would not have invested enough for the Indonesian government’s liking, since at present only $95 million has been spent by Apple. A broken promise that the government of President Prabowo Subianto has decided to punish. It prohibits the sale of the new iPhone 16 and Apple Watch Series 10 throughout Indonesia, reports Bloomberg.

For Apple, this is a real blow. Indonesia has some 350 million active smartphones in circulation and, if the Californian firm is not the biggest phone seller in the country, there is obviously a huge market to conquer. For the moment, we do not know if the country will reverse its decision. Perhaps the construction of a first Apple Store in the country could shake things up…
