This Bride Dies During Marriage, Her Sister Is Made A Substitute

NEW DELHI – A wedding ceremony in India turns into an awkward scene after the bride dies of a heart attack in the middle of the ritual. An awkward scene occurs when the victim’s younger sister is asked to take her place and marry the groom.

This is not the distracting storyline of a Bollywood movie; but it actually happened at a wedding ceremony in India last week.

The bride, identified only as Surbhi, fainted from a heart attack while exchanging bouquets traditionally with husband-to-be Manjesh Kumar at the start of their wedding ceremony last Thursday.

A doctor rushed to the scene, but Surbhi was pronounced dead.

But instead of the marriage stalling, the bride’s family comes up with an awkward solution—replacing the dead bride with her younger sister, Nisha.

“We don’t know what to do in this situation. The two families sat together and someone suggested that my little sister; Nisha, married the groom,” Saurabh, Surbhi’s brother, told the news agency IANS.

“The family discussed the matter and both agreed,” he said.

Manjesh then marries Nisha with Surbhi’s body buried in another room until the wedding celebrations end.

“It was a strange situation when my sister’s wedding took place while the body of my other sister was lying in another room,” Saurabh told Times of India, Thursday (3/6/2021).

Surbhi’s sudden death leaves her mother; Guddi Devi, making an emotional plea to continue the marriage, offers Nisha in Surbhi’s position.

The family reportedly struggled with “mixed emotions” after the wedding.

“The grief over his death and the joy of his marriage have not permeated,” Saurabh said.
